Deborah Hoeper is a local Maryland artist. A native West Virginian, she has had a studio at Passageways, in Riverdale, Maryland, for twenty years. She has exhibited her work in many local galleries over the past years. Currently she is a member of a cooperative gallery, the Artists’ Gallery in Ellicott City, Maryland.
She is an artist member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society. Her work can be viewed on the internet at www.artistsgallerycolumbia.com, and www.passagewaysstudio.com.
Ms. Hoeper paints landscapes which are more abstract than realistic, and she particularly enjoys working with color. She likes creating subtle changes of color instead of changes of value. Rather than paint a realistic view of the subject, she prefers to create a painting based upon an emotional reaction to the landscape. She wants to capture an illusion of place, a mysterious scene in which the viewer can also become involved. Creating feeling or atmosphere using color helps in this participation. A successful painting for her is one that glows with color and light for both the artist and the observer.
